Aboard the Jade Shadow [Sunday, Fandom time]

It had taken a few days to break free of the Kathol Rift, but the minute the ship cleared the interference, Ben had his comlink out to make a few long-needed calls back to various galaxies.

Ender and his dad had been good to talk to--or not talk to--but he needed to reconnect with some others, too--especially Jaina.

"Need to talk about what you say?" She was betting he'd say no, being a repressy type, but it might help.

"Not really," he admitted. "I miss you, though. I could use a hug."

Which took a lot for Ben to admit.

"I'd love to give you one," she told him honestly. "I don't suppose you get to stop back at Fandom much to visit at the moment."

"Do you like rocks?" Ben asked. "I saw lots of them."

"You could let Paul play with them." Best pet Ender could ask for!

Tahiri contemplated that for a moment, then mentally added it to the frighteningly extensive list of things she was pretty sure Luke could already do.

". . . seriously?" she asked. Because she'd heard of some pretty out-there Force skills, but now she was thinking of Karla's trick of vanishing things and calling them in, and really?

"Not for another nine years or so," Ben said. "Well, Ender'll go back in seven months, give or take. Time's been weird here. It's still summer in Fandom."

"Time moving weirdly. Somehow not shocking," Jaina said. "How long's it been for you?"

It took Ben a moment.

"Paul?"

"It doesn't disappear," Ben said. "It just instantly moves from one place to another. I can't figure it out yet. Dad knows all the astral stuff."

Ben got flow-walking.

"Thermal," Tahiri said slowly; she was still trying to figure out how that even worked in the Force. "Did you learn anything from them?"

"Ender's pet rock? Did he toss it out already?" Tony put a lot of work into that!

"A few months," Ben said. "I turned seventeen just before we went into the Rift."

Ben laughed. "No. He just didn't share its backstory with me. I think it lives under his pillow."

Ben had no proof of that at all.

"Happy belated birthday," she replied immediately. While feeling a little old.

There was a slightly strained pause. "Do you know about flow-walking?"

". . . no," Tahiri replied after several moments of racking her brain. "Should I?"

A weight lifted from his shoulders that he didn't know he'd had there. "No," he said. "Basically, it's a technique to see the past or the future as it's happening. It is really not worth looking. At all. Ever again."

"You are lying to me," Karla said. "I'm pretty sure that's the plot of one of the movies 'Dite has in the back room. Gorgeous Galactic Gals XVII or something equally ridiculous."

"Thanks," Ben said with a quick grin. "I feel much more mature now."

"I'll do my best," Ben promised. "Is Fish!Ben still alive?"

"There was nothing gorgeous about the Aing-Tii," Ben said. "They looked like giant rocks."

"That sounds dangerous," Tahiri replied with a kind of caution that the other her would have done well to exercise. "I think I know enough as it is, knowing you and your grandfather."

Which, she realized, was beside the point.

"It was rough, wasn't it? Are you all right?"

"Not really," Ben admitted softly, "but I'll get there."
