Ben's bed, fortunately, had stopped being a nest overnight and was back to being bed-shaped, though that was a little hard to notice as it was currently covered in various bags of sandwiches, boxes of cookies and cans of soda.

The extremely ugly vase he'd bought for Ender was in a place of honor by the television. Ben was privately wondering how long it would take his roommate to notice that it'd been moved.

Ben's choice in movies--one of the car ones he was addicted to--was ready in the DVD player, and he was waiting for Karla and Ender to start up movie night and to pick up all of the subtle nuance of the film.

Ender generally made a habit of making sure he knew where everything was in his room (as evidenced by how extremely bare, even in comparison to Ben's, his end of the room was - the bookcase was about the only thing that didn't look sterile). When he walked back in that evening, he paused, noted the vase, and privately decided to wait and see how long Ben would take to bring it up to him.

He sat down on his bed. "Well, this is going to be fun."

"Even if it's not in Spanish?" Ben replied. "I was thinking of starting with the first movie."

Because you might miss the important backstory if they skipped to four or something.

"By all means," Ender said, flopping back on his bed. "It's not like it matters all that much."

Being that many of these movies were practically identical in a lot of ways, barring amount of hair and size of biceps.

The biceps were integral to the plot!

"We could try to watch them in French next time?" Ben replied. I think that was one of the options."

Because there would be a next time, sadly.

Ender wondered idly how many more times he'd be able to sit through this movie before he broke the DVD to pieces and left them artfully decorating Ben's pillow in the night.

Ahem.

"We'll burn that bridge when we get to it," Ender decided. "All braced for Karla-overload?"

"As it's possible to be," Ben said with a little smile. "I think I got enough food to keep her happy."

Ender glanced over towards Ben's bed. "Yeah," he said, after a moment, "I think we've got it covered. I think."

"You can still see some of the covers!" Ben replied.

Just not a lot of them.

"If you're worried, run to the kitchen and get cookies," Ender suggested.

"That someone else made, right?" Ben checked.

"Yes," Ender said, immediately. "Definitely yes."

Ben glanced appraisingly at Mt. Junk Food. "Maybe I'll wait until she gets here and see if she wants pizza instead."

"Mhm," Ender said, and also gazed upon Mt. Junk Food. "I'm impressed in spite of myself."

Someone was beating a tattoo on the door and would have been horribly offended by the idea of a Karla-overload.

Three guesses no prizes who that person was.

You would think after two years of this, she would just come in. You would be wrong.

"Karla, come in," Ender called. He was used to it by now. "I hope you're ready to watch Ben's favorite movie. For the first time."

If he sounded a little dry, well...

Karla ducked inside, giving Ender a sympathetic look. "What number is it for you?" she asked.

And then was distracted by the MOUNTAIN OF SNACKS that had once been Ben's bed. "Is that for m--us?" she asked, pleased.

If the movie was awful, she'd have something to distract herself with!

"Yes," Ben said proudly. "Even Apu looked impressed."

"We didn't want you to starve," Ender told Karla, in that same dry voice. He shuffled up back against the wall and glanced towards the television.

"Is that the world's ugliest vase?" Karla asked, glancing back at the teevee. "Why is it there? Hell's fire, why is it here?"

She looked at Ben. "This is your fault, isn't it."

"Why would you think that?" Ben asked, sitting on Ender's bed and looking hurt.

It was entirely his fault, yes.

"It was his idea of a gift after he wrecked one at the house," Ender explained. "I'm considering breaking it over his head and calling that a gift."

His voice remained entirely conversational the whole way through. Maybe Karla was a bad influence.

The narration is hurt by the 'maybe.'

"Maybe it will reset his idea of aesthetics," Karla said thoughtfully, the hideousness of the vase keeping her attention even off the snacks. "Then it really will be a blessing."

"Maybe I made it myself and am very insulted by your insults to my artistic gifts," Ben said.

He hadn't made it at all.

"If you had made it yourself, it'd look worse," Ender said, picking up the DVD remote and tossing it at Ben.

Yes, they'd only gotten worse over the summer.

"This is actually your fault, Ender," Karla decided, preemptively chucking a snack cake at Ben's soon-to-be-smug head. "You were worried about devaluing the house because of the loss of the vase. So Ben took it as a challenge to prove that it was possible to devalue the house even more by having a vase there."

Mother Night, that thing was awful.

"Or to make it seem like the loss of the microwave wasn't as bad as it could be."
