Hapes [Sunday evening]

Ben would have given anything for his first impression of his father in months not to be what it was: the Jedi Grand Master flattened by grief, almost impossible to find in the Force, and gazing down at Mara as she laid on an examination table.

Luke didn't even turn around as Ben entered, just held up his arm for Ben to come under. "Hey sweetheart," he murmured to his wife, "it's Ben."

"Dad," Ben began, "I know she's telling us something. I've been thinking about it all the way back." Why else would his mother's body still be here, instead of joining the Force?

Luke looked at him without comprehension. "Anyway, I got Lumiya," he offered in a lifeless voice Ben had never wanted to hear.

"Yeah?" Ben couldn't hide his surprise. "What do you mean, got?" Force knew where that sphere had gone after Ben had taken off into the depths of Kavan.

"I killed her," Luke said. "I won't dress it up. I owed it to Mara to give her justice."

Ben stiffened, his entire Force sense going edgy. "Dad..."

"I know, legal process and all that, but legal process..." Luke shook his head like he was trying to clear cobwebs from his mind. "Lumiya said she had to...well, a life for a life. That's all."

"Dad...Dad," Ben wasn't sure he could add to his father's burden. "Dad, it wasn't Lumiya."

"It was. She said..." Luke frowned as he tried to remember what she'd said.

"No, it can't be, because I was right next to her at the moment Mom died, nowhere near the scene," Ben said gently. "We'd landed on Kavan, both of us. She was still in the Sith sphere."

Luke's face lost what little color it had.

"Dad, take it easy, okay?" Ben reached out to grab Luke's shoulders, afraid his father was going to collapse entirely. "We'll find who did it. Dad, that's why Mom stayed. She stayed so we could find evidence. Forget about Lumiya. You just got to her first---I was going after her before Mom died. You did the galaxy a necessary service."

Luke sank to his knees. "I killed the wrong--"

"Sith," Ben snarled out.

"I killed the wrong person!"

Ben put his hands on either side of his father's face, remembering a bit of what Ender had done to calm his panic. "Look at me, Dad. It's not good to do this here. Let's do this somewhere else."

"Ben..."

"What about the other people she killed and had killed?" Ben argued. "She's not worth your anguish, Dad." He swallowed around a lump in his throat he was beginning to think might never disappear. "Save your tears for Mom, 'cause I will."

Luke held on for a few more minutes before nodding and striding from the room, leaving Ben alone with his mother.

Which was really just leaving Ben alone.

Ben stayed in the silence for as long as he could bear it before fleeing the room himself to find someplace to rage in private.
