Room 424 [afternoon]

Ben hadn't really had much of a chance to talk to his dad that week: lessons with his grandfather (who was still kicking his butt with a lightsaber without moving. It was annoying), a date with Tahiri (which he would definitely be doing again. Yes.), classes, clubs, stopping in on his weekly trips to bother Ender, Kaylee, and Aravis...for a not-so-social person, he had managed to fill up his schedule pretty well.

But he'd promised Tahiri that he would ask his dad about starting a dance troupe--mostly to see if he could get Luke to crack a smile--and so he was lounging on his bed with his comlink, pretty happy for the first time in a while.

Naturally, that couldn't last.

When he clicked his comm shut a few minutes later, he'd not only forgotten to ask about the dance troupe, he'd learned that Centerpoint Station had been fired again, Jacen had kidnapped Tenel Ka's daughter for use as a bargaining chip (because that had worked so well with the Jedi), and Jaina was on the trail of Alema, who Luke was still convinced had murdered Mara.

"Kriffing hell," Ben muttered to himself before settling down on the floor to build something loud and complicated.

Mmm. Repression.

Ender wouldn't have bothered if it hadn't been for the noise. Even then, he almost didn't, but he was near and curiosity grabbed him soundly. (If there was any worry, he wouldn't admit it, or at least dismiss it as pointless. That wasn't important)

He knocked twice and waited.

Ben reached into the Force to find out who it was. "Come in, Ender," he called, stopping his hammering for a moment.

"You're going to break the wall at the rate you're going," Ender observed, pushing open the door and heading in. "Soundwaves aren't very covert."

Ben gave a little shrug. "I'm almost done with the loud part?" he tried.

"You don't have to justify it to me," he said neutrally, and looked upon Ben's project.

It didn't look like much so far. "It'll eventually be a modified astromech droid," Ben said, reaching for the schematics. "Like Artoo--Dad's astromech--but more updated. Not that I have a StealthX to fly or anything, but I figured I should get a head start."

Most people, it should be noted, just bought a new astromech.

Ender'd be disappointed if Ben bought his. "So what are your modifications going to be?" he asked, "Are you going to make it spin on the ice?"

Ben grinned. "And shear sheep," he said, nodding.

"Make sure it knows how to mow lawns, too," Ender said, without even blinking. "Anticipate on Ronon."

Triela paused before knocking. Then, as if that pause had been enough, didn't wait for a reply before yelling through the door. "You need help breaking whatever you're breaking in there?"

"I'm not breaking anything!" Ben yelled back.

"It sounds like you are," Triela was still yelling.

Ben frowned and flung his hand out to open the door. Yes, from across the room.

"I'm not," he insisted.

Triela jumped back defensively in surprise, braced for an attack. But there wasn't one so she relaxed and tried to pretend she hadn't gotten spooked at all.

"Then what are you doing?" she asked archly, trying to sound imperious.

"Making a droid," Ben informed her. "The metal doesn't just bend itself."

Well, it could. But that wouldn't be nearly as satisfying.

"I see," Triela drawled.

She didn't.

"Any particular reason?"

"I like to make droids?" he offered.

Meg had been on a failed quest to find some potato chips in one of the common room kitchens when she walked past Ben's room and heard all the banging.

She knocked on the door, wondering if he'd hear her over the noise.

Ben stopped hammering and tilted his head towards the door. "Come in, Meg," he called.

"How'd you know it was me?" Meg asked as she came in the door.

"I just did," Ben said with a smile. "Part of the Jedi thing."

"Does that mean you can read minds?"

Meg had a bad feeling she was about to do a lot of face palming.

Ben shook his head. "No, just emotions. If emotions are clear enough, it can seem like I've read your mind, though. My dad and his sister are pretty much able to read each other's minds, but they've had a lot more practice."

Because Meg remembered a few times of sitting in class wondering if Professor Skywalker could be any more uptight. If he heard that....

Ben snorted. "There's not a lot Granddad can't do," he said. "He can totally read minds."
