Coruscant, GFFA [Wednesday night, Fandom time]

After dropping their bags off at the Skywalker apartment, Ben insisted that Ender and Karla experience some of the sights and sounds (and smells, sorry to say) of Coruscant, and practically dragged them down to the Coruscant University sector and into the Haunch of Nerf, one of the stranger cantinas on the planet.

"I'd recommend the nerf," Ben said, eyes twinkling over his glass of lum. He rarely drank, but lum tasted like home and made him feel more like an adult. Tonight he decided he needed both.

"He did," Ender agreed. "It didn't explain much, however; you know your grandfather."

Ben snickered and nodded. "Yeah. Well, some of that is probably because of how he got his information--he wasn't exactly in the room when the scene he uses went down. The guy in carbonite on the wall was Uncle Han."

"Well," Ender said, tactfully, "Your family does know how to get into trouble." Beat. "How did he wind up there?"

"Vader put him in carbonite to test it and make sure it wouldn't kill Dad, then gave Uncle Han to a bounty hunter." He frowned. "Uncle Han had a price on his head for dumping a load of spice he was supposed to be delivering for Jabba."

"So no wonder Han has some mixed feelings about the Hutts," he said. "How long did he work with them, do you think?"

"A while," Ben said, looking a little uncomfortable. "He doesn't like to talk about it. Smuggling spice for a Hutt is about as low as you can get without trafficking in slaves."

Ender gave him a quick, disarming smile. "Why?" he asked. "You know I'm not here to pass judgment on your uncle's past."

"I know," Ben said, smiling back. "He was in the Imperial Navy, forever ago. He freed a Wookiee slave--Chewbacca, who was his best friend until he died at the beginning of the war Tahiri just finished fighting--against direct orders and had to flee. With an Imperial price on your head, there aren't a lot of legal options for making money. So he smuggled."
