Eros [Sunday afternoon, Fandom time, NFB]

Ender had wandered off on his own for a while, which meant that Ben now had a chance to really explore Eros.

Wearing his most Earth-friendly pair of jeans and a black t-shirt (and slipping his lightsaber into his backpack just in case), Ben joined the people in the narrow hallways (careful not to bang his head on anything--half-gravity made for a really bouncy experience) and fought back the almost constant feeing of vertigo caused by the way the floors sloped downward.

He wouldn't want to spend an hour more than absolutely necessary here and he noticed a slightly green tinge on the faces of those he guessed were the most recent arrivals. But Ben loved learning about new places--even really weird ones like this--and soon he was searching for a food vendor and people to talk to.

Alessandra blinked. "You know?" she said, hesitantly, "When that guy pulled that gun in that shop and he just stepped up and talked to him until he dropped it?"

And hadn't seemed particularly terrified to have the gun pointed at him, either, but Alessandra wasn't really thinking about that part.

"Must have skipped his mind to mention that," Ben said a little tightly.

Alessandra winced. "Sorry," she said, "I thought everyone had heard about that."

"I have now," Ben said lightly. His tone wouldn't have fooled Ender for a second. "Any other acts he might've been keeping from me?"

"Um..." Alessandra stared at him. "I don't know?"

"Let me rephrase," Ben said. "Did Ender do anything else that was interesting the last time he was on Eros?"

"Not unless you mean him getting the flu and winding up in the hospital, poor dear," Dorabella interjected.

Chamrajnagar was good at spreading PR stories.

"I talked to him then," Ben said with a slight frown. Ender was going to get a chat. "I think I will try the Greek place," he said, switching topics abruptly. "Would you like anything from it? I generally order one of a lot of stuff if I'm not familiar with the food."

"Could you pick up a peinirli for me, please?" Alessandra said, quietly.

Dorabella laughed. "Oh, we must watch our girlish figures," she said, "Keep it all for your healthy appetite."

Ben snorted. "One snack isn't going to kill you," he said. "Peinirli? Did I say that right?"

Alessandra nodded quickly. "It's a kind of sandwich," she said.

"So if I return with a type of pet, I did something wrong," Ben said with a quick smile.

He didn't think the girl had a candle's chance on Hoth of getting anywhere with Ender, but it didn't mean she couldn't use a friend.

Or at least someone friendly. He wasn't inviting her to join him anywhere.

Alessandra actually giggled. "Most probably and utterly," she said. "Thank you."

Don't worry, Ben. Some dashing Battle Schooler would swoop in and extricate you eventually.

As long as it wasn't Bean, Ben would be prepared to kiss them in gratitude.

"I'll be right back then."

"Bye!" Alessandra said, giving him a little bit of a wave. She dropped her hand as soon as she got the Look from mother, though.

As if on cue, Dink and Carn Carby rounded around the corner and wandered into the market, though they were too busy arguing to spot anyone.

Ben moved on a course to intercept them. Angry Battle Schoolers were easier to deal with than clingy girls that he felt weirdly sorry for.

"--there is no way Lee would have won with that strategy," Carn argued. "Seriously, don't be such a dullbob."

"You're the one with the kuso strategy," Dink said, mildly. Sort of. "And I-- uh-- Ben?"

Ben smiled. "Ho, Dink. Ho, Carn. I promise I'm not starting a fanclub for you or anything."

"Well, who would?" Carn asked, flippantly. "He's about as smooth as a slug."

"Figured out which way your zipper goes yet?" Dink shot back. "I know you Aussies do everything the other way around."

"Let me check," Carn said, and made a show of glancing down at his pants. "Hmm..."

Ah, Battle School brats.

"If you're going to ask him to show you, I'm going to just go away and come back later," Ben declared.

"Oh, he wishes," Carn said, looking back up.

Dink rolled his eyes. "You tagged along with Ender?" he guessed. "We haven't seen him yet." And after his last conversation with Ender, he was feeling a little... weird about it.

"He's been practically living in conference rooms," Ben said, "so I'm not too surprised to hear you've missed him."

And he wasn't sure that Ender was exactly going out of his way to seek out the Jeesh, but that wasn't something he'd say aloud.

Carn pulled a face. "And to think, I was getting into this line of work to get away from all the meetings," he sighed.

"Don't get happy about being third now," Dink warned him, lightly. "I was just getting used to lording it over you."

"Well, they've probably stacked up since he hasn't been around to get to them," Ben said, trying to sound reassuring.

Carn snorted. "You don't have to reassure him," he said, "He turned down the governor job - probably just so he'd have an excuse to be a bother to whatever poor sod they appoint in his place. He's got no meetings and all the time in the world."

"It's not my fault you were an idiot and took the position," Dink said.
