It had taken a few days to break free of the Kathol Rift, but the minute the ship cleared the interference, Ben had his comlink out to make a few long-needed calls back to various galaxies.

Ender and his dad had been good to talk to--or not talk to--but he needed to reconnect with some others, too--especially Jaina.

"Cilghal doesn't say anything bad about him," Ben offered.

But then, Cilghal wouldn't.

"She's Cilghal," Jaina said. "He's been in charge of things before, I don't doubt he can do the job. I don't really have anything against him, but... with Daala?"

"You're there and so's your mom," Ben said. "Hopefully we won't get played too badly."

[solo_sword]

She shook her head. "Did you ever guess boring negotiations would turn into this?"

[momslilassassin]

"Not even in my most bored, insane mental ramblings," Ben replied.

[solo_sword]

"You have bored, insane mental ramblings?" she said, going for light.

[momslilassassin]

"Doesn't everyone during pre-negotiation negotiations?" Ben asked.

[solo_sword]

"No. But then, I avoid the pre-negotiation negotiations whenever I can," she said. "Successfully."

Yeah, so far.

"So far," Ben said.

[solo_sword]

She made a face. "Let's not dwell on that part, okay?"

[momslilassassin]

"That's one of the good things about being here," Ben said. "Not a lot of meetings."

[solo_sword]

"I'm jealous," she said. Not that she was around for many meetings right now. "And if any of you feel the need to start holding them, that would be a sign to get back to civilization immediately."

Ben snickered. "I'll hold an intervention at the first sign of Ender trying to type up a memo."

[solo_sword]

"I want video," Jaina decided. "It'll keep me entertained."

[momslilassassin]

"Well, my primary goal is to keep you entertained," he teased.

[solo_sword]

"Well, it doesn't have to be your primary goal, but as long as it ranks somewhere," she laughed. "And for some strange reason it just occurred to me to send you pictures of Grandfather as a cat."

[momslilassassin]

"Please, please, please do that," Ben begged.

[solo_sword]

"Jan and Juliet got to him," she added.

[momslilassassin]

"Tell me there were ribbons," he demanded.

[solo_sword]

Jaina already had her phone out while she talked over her comlink. "No need. You should have copies any second now."

[momslilassassin]

And cue the hysterical laughter. "Oh, I needed that."

[solo_sword]

Considering how he had sounded when Jaina first picked up, she was relieved to hear laughter. "Glad I could help."

"I'm glad I called," Ben said, sobering slightly. "Take care of yourself, okay?"

[solo_sword]

"You too," she told him. "May the Force be with you."

"And with you," Ben said quietly.

It was going to be a tough little while for both of them. He could feel it.
