Around town [mid-morning]
Bean walked away. He had memorized the route, of course, and knew how to get to the causeway without Sister Carlotta's help. But that was no consolation for the bitter disappointment of finding out that Peter was a gameplaying fool.
No one called after him, and he did not look back.
He knew the way to the causeway, but Peter's booked portal wouldn't be in for a while yet. So what was the point of waiting around for the portal to magically appear? Bean glanced up and looked at the large castle that spiked out from the hills.
What a waste of a trip. At least if they had gone to Greensboro and waited for Peter to come home during his break, he'd have been able to see the place where Ender had grown up.
He began to walk aimlessly, his instincts telling him to keep moving.

Ben | Ben was on a walk of his own, coming back from the Perk with a coffee in his hand, when he recognized a very familiar Force presence. "Kuso," he muttered under his breath. Peter could have at least given him a -- okay, no, there was no way Peter would have known to warn him about this, but it didn't mean Ben was feeling particularly charitable towards the guy right now. "Bean?" he called out. He didn't have a plan other than "don't let this kid near Ender," but it wasn't very Skywalker to plan things out in general and it hadn't ended too badly in the past. Right? |
Bean | Bean's eyes widened. Had he been recognized this easily? He started moving faster, cursing that he'd chosen to let his guard down in any capacity. He should have just ordered a portal straight out of here by himself; maybe gone to the mainland. |
Ben | "Oh, relax a minute," Ben called. "If I was trying to hurt you, I wouldn't call your name out first." Three seconds in the kid's presence and he was already annoyed. |
Bean | Bean threw a glance over his shoulder that clearly communicated what, do you think I'm stupid?. He didn't stop walking. |
Ben | Ben rolled his eyes. "Of course I don't think you're stupid," he said. "I know who you are." Smart, cagey, irritating beyond all reason... "Are you here for Peter?" |
Bean | That... caused Bean to stop for a moment. "Has he been telling all his friends?" he asked. Dryly, and with suspicion. |
Ben | Ben snorted. "Peter and I aren't exactly friends," he said, stepping closer. "I just have an interest in your world's politics." Well, something like that. |
Bean | "You'll excuse me if I don't feel put at ease by that," Bean said. He was starting to walk again. Kuso. Where should he go? |
Ben | "You're in unfamiliar territory talking to an unhelpful stranger," Ben said, not without some sympathy. "There's nothing in this that would put you at ease. But I can find Peter for you to stop you from wandering around if that would help." |
Bean | "I was in fact trying to get away from him," Bean said icily. A moment later, he took a very sudden turn into an alley. |
Ben | Ben growled a curse out under his breath and reached for his comlink. "Would you stay still for a second?" he called out. Got time to corral a Bean w me? he texted to Tony before trotting after Bean. |
Tony | Weird Jedi past time? Tony texted back, but was already moving to get out of the lab and track Ben's signal. |
Ben | Weird dude from Es past. Dead in his timeline. Which would explain some of why Ben was tracking him down. |
Tony | Well, it certainly worked to get Tony moving faster, at least. A brisk jog, phone in front of him to pinpoint Ben's location, and there he was; an engine grease smudged cavalry over the horizon. "Hey." |
Ben | Ben pointed. "That's Bean," he said. "He was here to talk with Peter--from the six or so words he's said to me, it didn't go particularly well." Which was shocking, really. Bean and Peter were both such people people. "I don't want him getting any closer than he is to the dorms." Which was where Ender was, but that wasn't a name Ben wanted to toss around. |
Bean | Bean was still walking fast, though to his frustration he found he wasn't just not losing the guy on his tail, but someone else had joined him, too. Don't want him getting any closer than he is to the dorms, he caught. Why not? He frowned, throwing a quick glance over his shoulder towards the campus. Then again, was it worth risking his cover on a hunch? Likely the dorms were exactly where this person wanted him to go. |
Ben | Ben gave him a little (tight, insincere) smile and a wave in reply. "We just want to talk to you." |
Bean | "Talk to somebody else," Bean snapped. |
Ben | "But I know everyone else here," Ben said. "You're the new face." Well, relatively new. |
Tony | "Totally new to me," Tony chimed in. "I'm Tony, by the way." |
Bean | "Don't insult me," Bean said. "I'm certainly not new to your friend here, Tony." |
Ben | Ben gave Tony an exasperated look. Talking to Bean was such a pain in the ass. "You were supposed to be dead a few weeks back," he noted. "I'm glad you're not." |
Tony | "We should get ice cream to celebrate?" Tony suggested slowly. Because he wasn't so great at the non-ass-kicking part of being heroic. |
Bean | "Again, I'm sorry if I'd rather not take you at face value about that." Bean had finally stopped, though, and spun around. "Why else are you being so persistent?" He shot Tony a glance. "I just had gelato yesterday. Your ice cream won't match up." |
Tony | "Because we're nice guys?" Tony suggested, jogging to catch up with the kid. "And gelato isn't any good outside of New York, so you've made a bad argument there." |
Bean | Bean snorted. "The gelato in Italy is much better than that in New York," he said. Which meant he'd eaten it anywhere but in Italy. |
Tony | "Have you been to New York?" Tony asked. Because he was a New Yorker. And this was distracting the kid nicely. |
Bean | "Yes," Bean said flatly. "And you're wasting my time." Ouch. Burn from a ten-year-old, Tony. |
Ben | Ben rolled his eyes. Again. This much time with Bean was going to give him eyestrain. "Eating before you leave is a good idea," he said. "You never know when you might get a chance to eat again when you're running. You can even make us try stuff first to be sure it's not poisoned." |
Tony | Ouch, Bean, Ouch. "There's a burger place," Tony suggested. |
Bean | "Again: Why would I want to eat with you?" Bean eyed the both of them. |
Ben | Ben shrugged. "So we could braid each other's hair and become the best of friends, neh?" |
Bean | "You think Battle School slang is going to make me warm up to you?" Bean asked. "Look, I don't know what you want, but this whole gangster-style intimidation attempt - it's not for me." |

Or maybe he should just walk to the coast and hop down into the sea to get rid of his two stalkers. They were incredibly irritating.

"It's just lucky there's no mirrors around here," Tony replied. Because Ben and him were morons.

In his view, this was only the start of paying Bean back for the extended exposure to his sex life Ben had experienced.
