It was old habit that led Ben to sit on asking Ender "what the hell was that?" about their meeting with Cade, their frankly terrifying and surly grandson, what the hell what the hell what the hell, until they were tucked into bed together.

"Soo..." he began. "What the hell was that?"

"I think 'fairly' is not the right word here," Ender said dryly. "Between the territorial pissings, the accusing me and Rolund of wanting to do it, and the trying to weld him in with explosives..."

"Well, he was totally trying to jump you, at least," Ben said, frowning hard. "Though it's probable that my memory isn't the most reliable here."

"He was flirting with me to get me off my game," Ender said. "And to mess with your head. He succeeded at at least one of them."

"Completely," Ben said ruefully.

Ender kissed his cheek. "Besides," he said, "You were prettier."

"Because I still embraced insane concepts like eating and bathing?" Ben teased.

Ender laughed. "Those were big points in your favor," he replied. "Though you lost that a little near the end there."

"I'll do my best not to lose those habits in the future," Ben said, snuggling in closer.

"I appreciate it," Ender said dryly. "Especially now that we're sharing a bed."

Ben smiled softly to himself. "Yeah, we do that."

"Admittedly," Ender said, "We were doing so back then too. Occasionally."

Ben kissed his neck. "Still for comfort then, too. That part hasn't changed."

"I'd like to think we've extended our cadre of reasons considerably," Ender mumured. "For comfort. For closeness. For feeling your skin against mine. For sex. For strength..."

"...because it's hard to sleep without you," Ben added softly.

Ender kissed him just as softly. "The problem with retrospectives is that you always see patterns that might not have actually been there," he murmured. "Still, I'd like to think we realized we had a good idea going."

"Even that night on Naboo I accidentally nudged into you?" Ben asked, blushing. "I was pretty sure I was going to die of embarrassment."

"Well, I'm not saying there weren't any unfortunate erections or... feelings," Ender said. After a beat, he added, "From both of us..."

"Really?" Ben said. "I know mine, what was yours?"

"Oh, come on," Ender said. "A hot boy I've had an interest in for years decides to hug me in his sleep and he's got a cucumber in his pants?"

Ben laughed and kissed him. "Sorry, I was too busy drowning in feelings to wonder about yours at the time. Well, when I do that again, you have permission to wake me up properly to say hello."

Ender chuckled and kissed him back. "Haven't I already?" he said. "I plan to keep it up, either way."

"It's definitely a nicer way to wake up than a blaring alarm clock," Ben agreed.

Ender kissed him again, stretching happily against him. "I try my best."

"Your best is very, very good," Ben murmured, sliding his hands along Ender's side.

"I thought we were going to turn in for sleep," Ender said softly, but not unamused.

It wasn't keeping him from kissing Ben again either.
