"Happy birthday, Val!" Ben said, beaming at the baby, who was glowering at him from under her (frankly hilarious) pink and bedazzled birthday crown. Ben was hoping this would nip the "want to wear the Queen of Naboo's headdresses" thing right in the bud.

"Cake?" Val asked pointedly, looking from one dad to the other.

"Give her a few weeks," Ben agreed, laughing. "She's figuring this out pretty fast."

Ender smiled. "Though not fast enough for her tastes, I think."

"Don't try to blame all of that on my side of the family," Ben teased. "She was walking and talking early because of your genes."

"Guilty as charged," Ender said, laughing. "We'll see what she does with it."

"Launch us into space," Ben said, kissing Ender's cheek.

"How very practical of her," Ender said, with a soft laugh.

"Ooooooh," said Val, batting at a new rainbow.

"She's pretty practical," Ben said, nodding.

"I think we should probably leave her with these two for a while before we bring her anything else," Ender said, smiling at her fondly. "The power of the sparklies compels her."

"Want to curl up together on the couch and watch our brilliant daughter be amazing?" Ben asked.

"I thought you'd never ask," Ender said, reaching for his hand.

Ben twined his fingers through Ender's and squeezed. "Love you."

Ender tugged him to the couch, where he settled down easily, stretching out and pulling Ben into him.

Ben sighed and closed his eyes happily, snuggling into Ender. "This is nice."

Ender kissed his neck. "It is," he said softly. "And I believe our daughter is trying to get the elephant to make glitter, now."

"Oh, she's gonna be a little disappointed," Ben chuckled.

"Or she'll decide to make glitter for it instead," Ender said. "She's giving like that."

He smiled faintly. "The older she gets, the more parts I see that look a little like you."

Val took after Ender quite a bit, but not entirely.

Ben kissed Ender's cheek. "Yeah?" he said softly. "Like what?"

"Little things," Ender said, smiling. "The way her hair grows. The way her fingers bend. Her toes..."

Ben laughed. "She definitely has my toes," he agreed. "Poor thing."

"I think they're cute," Ender said fondly. "If occasionally ice cold."

"You're hopelessly biased," Ben said, kissing him again.

"Yes," Ender said fondly, "But I'm allowed, I think."

"Always allowed," Ben said, smiling back just as fondly.

Ender kissed him softly. Then he peered past Ben. "--Look, she's doing that little finger wiggle again."

"She is so cute," Ben said, smiling at her, then at Ender. "We make good kids."
