Coruscant, GFFA [Wednesday night, Fandom time]

After dropping their bags off at the Skywalker apartment, Ben insisted that Ender and Karla experience some of the sights and sounds (and smells, sorry to say) of Coruscant, and practically dragged them down to the Coruscant University sector and into the Haunch of Nerf, one of the stranger cantinas on the planet.

"I'd recommend the nerf," Ben said, eyes twinkling over his glass of lum. He rarely drank, but lum tasted like home and made him feel more like an adult. Tonight he decided he needed both.

"He'd certainly like to think so," was Ender's verdict.

"And extremely good looking, no doubt," Ben added.

"He has a horrible haircut," Ender told him, "And sometime a wart on his nose."

"He does not," Ben replied.

"Did you check in a mirror?"

"I don't have to," Ben said, making a face at him. "Kreetle."

Ender laughed. "I didn't know Force vanity was part of your skillset," he teased.

"We don't generally mention it," Ben said loftily. "Besides, it'd be a terrible Jedi who doesn't notice if something about them changed."

"Uh huh," Ender said, skeptically. "So what will you be having?"

"Nerf tenderloin," Ben replied immediately. "Skip the durocrete fungus side dish. It's exactly what it sounds like."

Ender glanced back down on the menu. "...Fungus for dinner," he said, sounding vaguely surprised. "I guess I should get used to that."

"The stuff grows everywhere," Ben said. "Heavily processed it can turn into to something edible if not exactly tasty."

He paused. "Going to pass that along to your guy?"

"If they ever wind up with a famine, it might be an idea."

"Check it for hallucinogenic qualities first," Ben advised, "or you'll end up with something like the Fantazi mushroom rather than the Vaporator."

Pause.

"Which are pretty gross, just in case you were wondering, but if it can grow on Tatooine, it can grow anywhere."

"Duly noted," Ender said, dryly.

He put down the menu. "So is there anything I should avoid eating? Different enzymes, that kind of thing?"

Ben nodded. "There's a trick to reading the menu," he said. "Generally the first few pages are geared toward human diet, at least when you're in a cantina catering for humans. If you're in an Ithorian tapcaf, their food will naturally come first. The further back you get, the closer you are to Hutt cuisine and Gamorrean delicacies, which should be avoided at all times unless you want a mushroom that moves on its own."

"Now I almost want to see if I can't get more information on these different types of cuisine," Ender said, picking up his menu again so he could leaf towards the back.

Of course that would be more interesting to him than the alcoholic beverages. Freak.

"Of course you do," Ben said fondly. "Dork. Skip everything Huttese if you don't also want to experience a bacta bath later."

"Different metabolic system?" Ender guessed.

Seriously, boy, stop.

"Very," Ben said. "During their life cycles, they switch gender."

Mmmm, delicious dinner conversation.

Ender's brow furrowed. "That should make for interesting relationships," he said.

"Hutts are...different," Ben said, wrinkling up his nose. "Don't get Uncle Han started on them."

"I've never met your uncle Han, so it'd be kind of hard," Ender pointed out, "Although now you're making me curious."

"Did Granddad do his trip to a Hutt's palace lesson when you took his class?" Ben asked.

"He did," Ender agreed. "It didn't explain much, however; you know your grandfather."
