Ben and Ender were still hosting houseguests, and since the speeder hadn't been destroyed the day before, it meant it was time for Cultural Opportunities In Town!

...or Twi'leks dancing around poles.

Po-tay-to, Po-tah-to.

There was plenty to see in Theed before then, of course, as it would be kind of tacky to watching dancing girls at lunch. Or so Ben assumed.

Where there will be goodbyes. Woe!

Topher's bags had somehow managed to get significantly larger during his time here. It was best not to ask how that had happened. Regardless, it meant he had to make a couple of trips outside to where the portal was waiting.

So. Here he went. Outside. Grumbling under his breath about stupid heavy bags and really, how much space could a couple of alien-shaped stuffed animals possibly take up anyway?

Ben wandered out and glanced at the bags. "Sure you got everything?" he teased.

"Probably!" Topher said brightly. "But if I forgot anything, I will totally come back to get it."

A beat.

"With sunscreen."

Because really.

"And knocking?" Ben added.

"For the rest of my life," Topher said seriously.

Except for, like, Peter's room. Peter didn't engage in this silliness.

"Good," Ben said. "Respecting people's privacy is important."

That was probably too subtle a start.

Probably, yes.

"I guess?" Topher tried, shrugging bemusedly.

"Tony said you did some digging for Peter earlier in the summer," he said, lowering his voice. "It only went to Peter, right?"

See Topher. See Topher visibly freaked out.

"Um," he said. Fuck, had Tony said something? But Karla had said Ben would be really angry... "Um. I mean. I'm not gonna, uh. I mean, it isn't going to happen again. So, uh. You know. It's cool."

That didn't really answer Ben's question at all.

"Breathe, Topher," Ben said, eyes focused on his face and very much the cop he used to be. "I just want to know what you know."

"You're not mad?" Topher checked, looking faintly sick. "Karla said..."

"I don't know what you know, so I've no reason to be mad," Ben said evenly. "Tony said you ran into some pretty decent firewalls and didn't learn much. Is that still true?"

For a brief moment, Topher had a flash of the only horror movie he'd ever seen. Didn't people usually get killed at their friends' remote houses in the middle of nowhere?

Topher was a bit of a drama queen.

"Yeah, um, pretty much," he said, not meeting Ben's eyes. Apart from the obvious nerves he'd had before, though, there was a new discomfort in his posture that indicated that there was something he wasn't saying.

"Next time, bring luggage with wheels," Ender suggested without irony.

"Would've been smart," Topher granted, eyeing Ender cautiously to try to gauge if he was going to earn another confrontation.

He really, really didn't want one.

Ender just smiled at him in that vaguely distant way that he had. "Enjoyed your trip?" he asked.

"Yeah. Um. Thanks for. You know."

That was totally the appropriate way to thank your host.

"Letting you stay here and keeping Tony and Ben from abandoning you to half-naked Twi'leks?" Ender filled in. "You're welcome, Topher."

"It's a nice house," he added. Because, well, it was. Even if he'd said that already.

And now he was just going to shift from foot to foot and completely not think about Ender killing anyone in the shower.

...damn it.

Ender eyed him, feeling oddly as if this was more than just Topher's usual social awkwardness at work. "I'm glad you think so," he said, "I'm not about to bite you, Topher."

"I know!" Topher blurted out. "Because that was just Kate that one time and anyway she was only temporarily a vampire and that was a whole other thing, like, with an alternate universe something, which you definitely aren't because you're Ender, so that -- that would not be you! With the biting!"

Ender's eyebrows went up. "No, it wouldn't be," he said, "And we're not in that alternative universe."

"Because Kate isn't here."

...sure.

"We all had to deal with that fiasco a few years back," Ender said. He wasn't so sure that anything that made Topher so twitchy about Ender was something he particularly wanted to talk about, so he avoided forcing the issue.
