Ben and Ender were still hosting houseguests, and since the speeder hadn't been destroyed the day before, it meant it was time for Cultural Opportunities In Town!

...or Twi'leks dancing around poles.

There was plenty to see in Theed before then, of course, as it would be kind of tacky to watching dancing girls at lunch. Or so Ben assumed.

Ben wandered up with a bag full of presents and followed Ender's line of vision. "I think that's the tribute to Naboo's queens."

Ender slanted a look at him. "Let's take a closer look," he said, not commenting further as he set off towards it.

Ben followed along quietly, stopping only to take in the scenery around them. Theed really was a beautiful city.

"Elected Queens," Ender said, once he'd gotten there. "Now that would throw Karla for a loop."

"Throws a good chunk of the galaxy off-balance, really," Ben admitted. "They're always teenagers, too."

"But from what I've read, the position isn't entirely ceremonial," Ender said.

"Oh, no, not at all," Ben said, walking around the memorial. "I think most of the Queens--well, the Kings too, but there aren't as many of them--have gone through the Legislative Youth Project." Ben's lips quirked up. "Peter probably shouldn't meet the Queen--that combined level of political drive can't be good."

"The last thing we need is for Peter to dub himself Hegemon of your galaxy," Ender muttered.

Though that did remind him he had some communications from Dink, Shen and Alai in his inbox he should check. Soon.

"I don't think we've ever had a Hegemon," Ben mused. "Interesting shift from Emperors and Chiefs of State."

He sounded a little distracted because his wandering had brought him to the part of the memorial commemorating Padmé Amidala. Despite the years that had passed since her death, he was still weirdly touched to see the flowers left there were fresh and fragrant. Her people still remembered.

"He'd say it was a touch of je-ne-sais-quoi from my universe, but he'd be full of shit," Ender commented. He glanced at Ben's face. "Something on your mind?"

"How much have you learned about Padmé Amidala?" he asked, careful to keep to her political, public name.

"Highly ambitious, was a senator during the Clone Wars..." Ender made sure to know his history. To a point, at least. "Peter would've probably made sure to know her. Why?"

"She was my grandmother," Ben said with a little shrug. "It was a whole thing."

Ender met his eyes briefly, then glanced back towards the statue. "She's well remembered," he said.

"Yeah," Ben said softly. "She looks a bit like my aunt."

He was keeping personal pronouns out of this--no doubt that this memorial was monitored and as famous as the Skywalkers were, no one had linked the Senator of Naboo to Luke and Leia.

Ender quirked a tiny smile. "I can see that," he said, reaching for Ben's hand. "She was driven, from what I recall reading."

Ben squeezed Ender's fingers. "Very," he said. "And she always tried to do the right thing."

"Sounds like someone else I know," Ender said, then looked up at the memorial. "Well, a lot of people - most of us are inclined to think that way. But you know what I mean."

"I do," Ben said, smiling. "She made a difference," he said.

Too bad her legacy was tainted by Palpatine, the other famous Naboo politician.

"Want to leave something here?" Ender asked. "I won't even volunteer the vase."

Ben nudged into Ender's shoulder. "Yeah," he said finally. "I think there was a flower shop not so far down the road. I'll go and bring something back."

"Come on, then," Ender said, turning back the way they'd come. "You only get time to visit here once every few traumatic experiences."

Ben laughed. "I'll get you some flowers too," he said teasingly. "For your vase."

"As soon as the boys are gone, I am going up to the tallest hill nearby and throwing it off."

He would, too.

Ben laughed harder. "Can I watch?"
