Ben & Ender's house on Shakespeare [some evening]

Ben was curled up on the sofa with Ender's rather dry book on anatomy after Ben's research into the subject had brought up suggestions like "Bend Over," "Eating Out," and other titles that had sent Ben into an unhelpful cycle of flail. (Jane had a wicked sense of humor, not that Ben knew that.)

He had a dish of ice cream while he waited for dinner to warm up--his only outward sign of nerves--and kept glancing at the door waiting for Ender to come home.

Just another night, right? If he kept repeating that to himself, maybe he'd believe it.

"You deal with my flailing," Ben said. "I think we even each other out. Let's go home."

Ender leaned back. "This once," he said, "I'll let you hit the throttle."

Ben grinned. "Best boyfriend ever."

"Don't make me regret it," Ender warned. "It's getting late."

"I won't wrap us around any trees, love," Ben said with a little smile, setting the skimmer on a course back to town. "I've been flying since I could walk or near enough."

"I know," Ender said, shutting his eyes to feel the wind slide past him. "But I don't have your need for speed."

"Give me a few decades to work on that," Ben said fondly.

"I'm sure we'll be running at the same speed when we're 70," Ender said.

Which was the first time he'd made a joke like that, but shhh.

"Uncle Han is," Ben laughed.

"Uncle Han is a lunatic," Ender said fondly.

"But an active one," Ben said, still grinning.

"True," Ender said, and fell silent, watching Ben with a fond expression on his face.

Ben glanced over at him as they got closer to the house and smiled back. "What?"

"Nothing," Ender said. "You look happy."

"I am happy," Ben said quietly.

Ender smiled down at his feet.

Ben reached out to squeeze his hand. "Love you."

Ender squeezed his hand back. "Love you too," he said. "But please decelerate before we run into our own house."

"That would be embarrassing," Ben laughed, bringing them to a stop in front of their home.

Ender chuckled. "Especially for you," he said, slipping out the door, "Oh skimmer-whisperer."

"Well, everyone has their own talent," Ben said, chuckling as he headed back inside.

"It's actually what some of the guys have started to call you," Ender said, poking him in the side, then turning to shut the door.

Ben blushed hard. "Seriously?"

"When they think you're not looking," Ender agreed, stepping closer to him.

Ben leaned his head against Ender's. "Guess that means they like me."
