Ben had been to some stupidly decadent restaurants (being the son of Luke Skywalker had its privileges), but this one blew even those most ridiculous on Coruscant out of the water.

"This is barvy," he muttered to Ender as their waiter led them to their table. "Look at all of the people here. And...other beings...of course."

Ben hadn't been knocked so completely off-stride in years.

"I believe in the power of calcium," Ender said, holding up his glass of milk in toast.

Ben clinked his glass against Ender's. "To a night out."

"To the circle of life," Ender said wryly, and took a careful sip of his milk.

Ben took a cautious sip of his wine and decided it was drinkable--not that he'd be enough of a pain to ever send something back just because he didn't like it--and glanced back up at the ceiling. "The circle of life we'll watch fall apart just after the dessert course, right?"

"So we'd better make it a very good dessert," Ender said. "Something with a lot of chocolate."

"Want to split it?" Ben offered.

"Sure," Ender said, smiling. "I'll even let you choose."

"And that's why you're my favorite," Ben said, sipping from his glass again. "How's the milk?"

"It tastes like regular milk, which is all I asked of it," Ender said, sipping from his cup. "How's your class working out so far?"

"Pretty well," Ben said, "even if it's completely weird seeing Obi-Wan Kenobi every week."

"I can imagine," Ender said wryly. "He's been dead for how long, in your time?"

"Decades," Ben said. "Before Aunt Leia and Uncle Han really even knew each other."

"Are you getting along?" Ender asked, tilting his head.

[momslilassassin]

"I think so," Ben said. "He's not really...chatty. Unfailingly polite, but not open."

"Like a true Jedi," Ender said wryly.

"Or at least the old school type," Ben agreed.

"Not your father's Order, perhaps," Ender said.

"And Granddad was never a shining example of his own," Ben said dryly.

"Anakin Skywalker is an exception in many ways on many fronts," Ender said, also dryly. "Still, it has to leave you curious."

"Very," Ben admitted. "I should catch him after class and ask him things, but I worry he's uncomfortable that I was named for him."

"It was a lot of pressure to put on you when you were young," Ender said.

[momslilassassin]

"Yeah," Ben said. "Looking back, I thought I was handling it a lot better than I really was."

"What was different between your thoughts and reality?" Ender said.

[momslilassassin]

"I didn't think there was much pressure on me," Ben said.

Ender smiled quietly. "Until our junior year."
