Coruscant, GFFA [Wednesday night, Fandom time]

After dropping their bags off at the Skywalker apartment, Ben insisted that Ender and Karla experience some of the sights and sounds (and smells, sorry to say) of Coruscant, and practically dragged them down to the Coruscant University sector and into the Haunch of Nerf, one of the stranger cantinas on the planet.

"I'd recommend the nerf," Ben said, eyes twinkling over his glass of lum. He rarely drank, but lum tasted like home and made him feel more like an adult. Tonight he decided he needed both.

"Why does 'nerf' sound familiar?" Ender asked, leaning over the bar. "I'll just have a water, please."

"Because I've probably made you eat it before," Ben replied. "It's a bit like cow, but much tastier."

Not that Ben was a snob or anything.

"Or because it reminds me of a nerf bat," Ender returned, smoothly. "Of course you'd say they're tastier; your tastebuds have gotten acquainted with them over the years."

Really, pinning your snobhood on a guy like Ender was no fun at all.

"And nerf is a better word than beef," Ben decided.

"I'm not sure you'll ever find a scientist willing to say that has anything to do with your tastebuds."

Ben stuck his tongue out at him. "Whatever. What are you getting?"

"Nerf," Ender told him, amused. "A friend told me it was good."

"Your friend is very wise," Ben said, nodding, erm, very wisely.

"He'd certainly like to think so," was Ender's verdict.

"And extremely good looking, no doubt," Ben added.

"He has a horrible haircut," Ender told him, "And sometime a wart on his nose."

"He does not," Ben replied.

"Did you check in a mirror?"

"Water?" Karla complained, though with a smile. "Come on, Ender! We're on a completely different world. You have to try more than just water."

"I'm not really a big fan of alcoholic drinks, Karla," Ender said, shooting her a quick smile.

She frowned at the list of food and beverages. "They have to have something other than water and alochol," she said. "Err, don't they?"

"Most likely," Ender said, shooting her a quick grin, "But I'm going to err on the side of caution. Last time Ben took me here, he nearly got the both of us eaten."

Karla laughed. "Why am I unsurprised by that? Eaten by what, or do I really want to know?"

"A rancor," Ender said, smoothly. "Although that was on Dathomir. Here, I'm vastly more terrified by what I might eat."

"Maybe rancor is on the menu," Karla suggested with a grin. "You and Ben can get some of your own back."

"Don't ever let him take you out anywhere," Ender advised, then paused. "Sorry. I haven't even asked about your weekend. I met one of yours."

"Ben mentioned he was thinking of taking Jaenelle to meet you," Karla said. There might have been the slightest hint of awkwardness there, yes. "It was a very surprising weekend all around. I found I had a second daughter after I got into work on Monday. I think she deliberately waited until I'd gotten used to the idea of one, just so she could knock me for a loop again."

"Those weekends usually work like that," Ender said, and he managed a smile. "Although if you do have children, I'd advise making sure they don't know when you and your Consort 'have kisses'."

"What?" It wasn't quite a screech, but only because Karla had remembered they were in public at the very last minute. Dropping her face into her hands, she just shook her head. "Mother Night. This is all some kind of revenge for that kind of child I was, isn't it? How did that even--never mind. I'm not asking. Pass me some of that lum would you?"

Ender wordlessly passed her a glass, looking slightly amused and just the tiniest bit uncomfortable, but only if you bothered to look. "She was a very special child," he said, "But she was happy."
