The nice thing about the time difference between home and Fandom was that Ben had time to run a few errands for his father (the reason he'd come back home), pick up a package of comfort food for Tahiri and still have time to meet up with Ender and Karla for lunch before they headed back.

"So, any particular food requests today?" he asked them. "Dad said he might be able to swing by if we pick somewhere close to the Temple."

"We went to the future for like five months and I had my sixteenth birthday there, but then we went back to Fandom and less than a week had passed, so I was still only fifteen there, and so I've been unsure about how old I should say I was for about two months now," Karla explained, happy to get Luke away from the subject of who his son was interested in dating.

Luke smiled. "I can see how that can be a problem," he said. "Will you get two parties?"

"I think so," Karla said. "No one besides Ben got to celebrate my last one. Though he was awesome and surprised me with the one in the future, so I can't complain if that's the only one I get," she said, shooting Ben a smile. "It was the best part of the trip. And the bracelet he got me is lovely. See?" She held out her left wrist to show Luke.

"You bought jewelry, Ben?" He smiled at his son. "I didn't know you knew how?"

Ben blushed. "Point to something pretty, pay what they tell you. It's not hard."

"Errr...." Karla realized she was being spectacularly unhelpful here. "Not like that! I'm sure he buys jewelry for lots of girls!"

Luke's lips curled up. "Really."

"Maybe?" Karla tried.

Luke laughed. "My son is popular with girls?"

Don't sound so surprised, Luke.

Karla didn't appreciate the surprise in Luke's tone. "Lots of females like him!" Karla flared. "He's a good male to like!"

Ben was trying to sink through the durrocrete in embarrassment. "So, food?" he tried lamely.

Quiet, Ben. She wasn't talking to you. And Craft would let him do that. Take that, Force powers.

"Well, it's true," Karla said. "I can't think of any females who don't like him, except maybe someone like Rose, but then she's a bitch anyway."

Wait--could she say bitch in front of Luke? Cock was almost certainly off-limits.

Luke smiled again. "I'm certainly not disparaging Ben," he said, holding his hands up in mini-surrender. "I just wasn't ready to realize how grown up he was."

Yeah, that did take the wind out of her sails a bit. "Well, okay then," she said, still sounding a bit huffy. "Good. Because Ben's awesome and everyone should know that."

Though Karla would have no problems poking holes in his ego if all this talking him up bit started going to his head.

Luke was incredibly gifted at diffusing anger. "Should I get a billboard?"

"Please don't," Ben asked the sky, turning bright red.

"Absolutely," Karla said at same time. Smiling a little.

"I have a bad feeling about this," Ben whined muttered.

"When have I ever gotten you in trouble, Ben?" Karla asked, a mischeivous glint in her eye.

"Do I have to answer that honestly?" he teased.

""You just ask that cause you can't think of any time the answer is 'yes,'" Karla declared.

Ben rolled his eyes. "No, that's not it."

"Bet it is," Karla said, saucily. "Betcha can't even think of once."

"Eating your cooking," Ben replied promptly.

And that deserved a thwap of her own, onto Ben's ear. "Hey! Your grand--" glance at Luke "--our Ethics professor liked my cookies!"

That got Luke to laugh--the mental image of Darth Vader eating cookies was a little too much for him.

Okay, so Luke did know that. Karla relaxed a bit. "He really did," she said, earnestly. "If we had more time, I'd bake some and show you!"
