Room 204 [morning]

Prom had been fun and the evening after prom had been even more fun (Ben liked Ender in uniform, so sue him), but being fairly bright Fandom students who had been at the school for four years, both guys had remembered to put some clothing back on before falling asleep just in case.

Ben was curled into Ender now, sleeping in for once (so...past sun-up) and enjoying a weekend where he had nothing planned.

As a result, Ender woke first as sunlight began to stream in through the window. He released a deep breath and reached up to rub at his eyes without jostling Ben too much.

Morning.

"No one at the door yet?" Ben mumbled, wrapping his arms around Ender.

"Don't tempt the fates," Ender murmured, shifting a little to accommodate Ben's new death grip.

"Sorry," Ben replied, kissing Ender's neck. "Morning."

Val had a strategy: knock first. Then wait. Then knock again later. It usually worked out for the best and meant everyone involved could avoid anything... awkward.

So, having knocked, she waited.

A tiny groan escaped Ender's lips - sadly, not because of the placement of Ben's - and he sat up. "There we go."

"We don't want any!" Ben called, just in case that worked.

"That's really not going to work, dad," Val called back, choosing her words... very much on purpose, yes.

"Well, that was useless," Ender had to agree. "...Whoever it is sounds old."

He was getting up.

"Yeah," Ben agreed. "If they're here for a twenty year reunion, I'm hiding under the bed for the rest of the weekend."

"Don't be so melodramatic." Ender crossed the room and got to the door, opening it a few cracks to get a look at their early-morning disturbance.

Val's smile was not particularly sheepish, but Ender was welcome to interpret it that way if he really wanted to. She was being careful, though, her stance relaxing a fraction once she sensed Ender didn't seem to be as apprehensive as he'd been last time.

"Hi," she said. "It's Val. I know, I've grown. Tell Ben to stop hiding under the bed."

"I'm not hiding under it!" Ben insisted, climbing out of it and trying to straighten it a bit.

It would still be pretty obvious only the one was being used to sleep in. "Hey, Val. Welcome back?"

Ender shot him an amused glance and stepped out of Val's way. "Welcome back," he echoed. "Try not to take the fumbling personally."

"I never do," Val assured him as she stepped into the room. Her eyes flicked briefly towards the bed, and she relaxed more, a smile tugging at her face. "Hi, Ben," she added.

And now he was going to get hugged.

Ben hugged her back hard. "Hi, kid."

"I knew you'd figure it out," she whispered in his ear, then gave him a squeeze. "Sorry about dropping in like this, but I didn't really get to choose."

"Portal thing?" Ben guessed. "You're a lot older than last time."

"Portal thing," she agreed, finally letting go.

She sat down on the spare bed.

"As long as we're being scientific about it," Ender said, shutting the door behind him.

Val snorted. "Well, from my end, it's likely philotic entanglement is involved," she said. "Naturally, our portals are an anomaly - as tied to the philotic web as they are to the multiversal portal network at large. So maybe we had a malfunction. It's more likely that it's your island flaring up again, though - it's more unpredictable."

"I'd blame Fandom," Ben agreed, sitting on Ender's bed. "So you're...how old now?"

"Sixteen," Valentine volunteered. "It's been a few years since the last time I saw either of you this little."

"So I get taller?"
