Ben returned to his room from his club activities just in time for his father to call. A shuttle would be picking him up Friday afternoon for an assignment to be explained when he arrived on Endor.

Ben sighed as he sat down on the floor. At least it was his father calling the shots--he was pretty sure that meant he wouldn't be assassinating anyone this trip home.

But he'd probably need his lightsaber.

He pulled the parts for the new hilt out from under his bed and began welding them together using nothing but the Force. If the weapon was going to be his, it had to be built the old-fashioned way.

And for Jedi, it didn't get more old-fashioned than this.

Ben was so focused on the weapon floating above his lap that he didn't realize he'd left the door cracked open.

"Like he's killing them by inches," Ben said softly.

"Do you think there's a chance it'll be different for her?" Tahiri asked. "Or for me?"

"I have to," Ben said. "My Jaina's forgotten to smile, my Jacen tortures people, and my mom's dead. I don't want that for either of you."

Tahiri rested her head against his, her fingers running up and down his shoulder in soothing patterns. "It's stupid to say I wish you didn't have to go through that, isn't it? You, and . . . your versions of any of us, really."

Ben sighed. "Which reminds me. I'm going home on Friday for a mission."

[weetuskenraider]

"What?" Tahiri's stomach was doing a great impression of a turbolift with a cut cable. "But I just barely got back, and now . . . sorry. It doesn't work that way, I know."

Ben held on a little tighter. "Dad's running the op. I'm sure it'll be fine."

Because Luke was so known for his nice, safe, normal missions.

"Yeah, remember where I just came from?" Tahiri pointed out. She glanced down at the lightsaber hilt in Ben's lap omg so not dirty and asked, "Are you going to finish in time?"

"Not even close," he said. "I'll use my old one and work on this one when I get back."

He chewed on his lower lip, debating telling her something.

"You're thinking about something," Tahiri observed. "What?"

"After the whole Jacen thing," and what a nice way to brush over what had happened that was, "I made Dad promise to treat me just like any other Jedi. Because he hadn't. He chose me over what should've been done."

[weetuskenraider]

Tahiri turned to look at him, considering, and couldn't quite keep the fear out of her eyes. "You asked him not to try and protect you just because you're his son."

[momslilassassin]

Ben's hand reached for her cheek. "It isn't fair to everyone else if he doesn't," he replied.

And in that, he was very much his father's son.

"I know." Tahiri's hand came up to cover his. "I really do. I just --"

She took a deep breath. "I'm not losing you too, Ben."

Ben leaned forward to rest his forehead against hers. "You won't," he promised.

Tahiri reached out to pull him close. "I just might have to hold you to that."

[momslilassassin]

"It could just be a mission to get a lightsaber crystal," he murmured. He doubted it, but it could be.

[weetuskenraider]

"Could be." Tahiri didn't sound too convinced. "That'd be nice, huh? An easy mission for once."

Not that she was that optimistic about the prospects.

Ben moved the lightsaber parts out of the way so he could get closer to Tahiri. "It'd be a switch," he admitted.

She leaned against him and let out a soft laugh. "I'd say it'd be nice to not have to worry about you so much when you go home, but who am I kidding? I'd worry anyway."

[momslilassassin]

"And I know it's a waste of time to tell you not to," he said, playing with her hair. "But I'm pretty good at what I do."

He was more than pretty good.

"You're amazing at what you do," Tahiri told him. A completely objective opinion, of course. "Just don't get overconfident on me, okay?"

"I watched my dad and Jacen do their very best to kill each other," Ben said softly. "I'm not under any illusions that I'm close to their league."

[weetuskenraider]

He could probably feel her relief. "I know it's crazy, but that makes me feel a lot better."

[momslilassassin]

"I leave the crazy heroics to the crazier members of my family," he said with a small smile.

He lied.
