The nice thing about the time difference between home and Fandom was that Ben had time to run a few errands for his father (the reason he'd come back home), pick up a package of comfort food for Tahiri and still have time to meet up with Ender and Karla for lunch before they headed back.

"So, any particular food requests today?" he asked them. "Dad said he might be able to swing by if we pick somewhere close to the Temple."

"I told her to ask you," Ben said, looking mortified.

"Me? Why me?" Karla asked, glaring. "That's not even the least bit fair!"

"Because you weren't there," Ben said. "I was stalling."

Karla grumbled something unintelligible, though the tone suggested it wasn't complimentary. "You could have just said no," she added, louder. "That's what I did."

"I was pretty sure that in whatever insane world Jaenelle comes from, I'm not calling the shots," Ben teased.

[glacial_queen]

"Hey!" Karla protested automatically. Then paused. "Okay, that's fair," she said. "After all, it's not like you're calling the shots in this one, either."

"Leave me my delusions," Ben replied.

[glacial_queen]

"Only because you make the saddest faces when I don't," Karla teased.

Ben reached out to swat her.

"No hitting the mother of your children!" Karla said, laughing, as she dodged out of the way.

"Only in one reality," Ben retorted.

[glacial_queen]

"That you know of," Karla said, smirking.

Ben swatted her again.

Luke glanced between them, speculation in his eyes.

"Good point," Karla sniffed, folding her arms across her chest and tossing her hair. "You should be so lucky."

"Aren't you already dating someone?" Ben asked, noticing his father's speculation.

[glacial_queen]

"Aren't y--" Karla realized that she didn't actually know if Ben had told his father about Tahiri and certainly wasn't about to accidentally share that. "At sorta-sixteen, I am not making any future plans based on who I'm dating now," she amended quickly. "I'm not that foolish."

Wait--was that the right answer? Maybe she should have gone the 'and we're deliriously happy route'? Dammit.

"Sort of sixteen?" Luke replied.

"We went to the future for like five months and I had my sixteenth birthday there, but then we went back to Fandom and less than a week had passed, so I was still only fifteen there, and so I've been unsure about how old I should say I was for about two months now," Karla explained, happy to get Luke away from the subject of who his son was interested in dating.

Luke smiled. "I can see how that can be a problem," he said. "Will you get two parties?"

"I think so," Karla said. "No one besides Ben got to celebrate my last one. Though he was awesome and surprised me with the one in the future, so I can't complain if that's the only one I get," she said, shooting Ben a smile. "It was the best part of the trip. And the bracelet he got me is lovely. See?" She held out her left wrist to show Luke.

Not helping the speculation, Karla.

Yes, that look was back in Luke's eyes.

"You bought jewelry, Ben?" He smiled at his son. "I didn't know you knew how?"

Ben blushed. "Point to something pretty, pay what they tell you. It's not hard."

"Errr...." Karla realized she was being spectacularly unhelpful here. "Not like that! I'm sure he buys jewelry for lots of girls!"

Luke's lips curled up. "Really."

"Maybe?" Karla tried.

Luke laughed. "My son is popular with girls?"
