Ender's Swingin' Bachelor Pad, Naboo [Wednesday, Fandom time]

The nice thing about how time worked on Naboo was that even a few days away from Fandom meant that Ender and Ben had gotten almost a week to themselves to unwind.

Now the fridge was restocked, the rooms were prepared and the droid Ben had made was bustling industriously around getting rid of dust bunnies.

Ben and Ender were ready for their Fandom (and other universes!) invasion.

It was days like this that Warren was thankful for Karla's ability to just vanish things. Because the amount of unnecessary crap that they'd packed... well, he didn't want to be the one carrying it.

And yes, that was one of the thoughts still going through his head as he surveyed their surroundings.

"I'm on a different planet," he said, not for the first time since he and Karla had arrived. "Right this very moment, we're on a different planet. Like, in a different galaxy."

Kaeleer was a different world, too, but this was different, okay?

"Culture!" Warren laughed, grinning right back at Ben. "I'm a big fan of culture!"

Look, his experience with culture back at the Hall had involved him putting on pretty princess make-up. He was itching to see what sort of multicultural experiences Naboo could offer. Preferably of the sort that would be as far removed from mastering how to apply kohl as possible.

Warren would let Ben drink them only on the condition that he could have a few for himself. Did they card in space? Did Warren care?

"And what's in the blue ones?"

... Space things, Warren. Space things.

"Good enough for me!"

Warren was, ultimately, easy to please. If people drank it here on a regular basis, he'd probably survive it, after all.

Unless Ben decided to play Angry Birds again.

"So, is there anything I should avoid around here? I'm willing to try pretty much anything once, but, you know, if there's anything that you figure might send me flying for the hills or anything..."

"Weird, but still cool," Warren decided. "I've been meaning to visit Italy someday. This is just way cooler."

He had travelled through SPACE, Ben! He was on a different PLANET!! Did you see? Could you tell? Spaaaaace!

SHUT UP SHE NEEDED ALL OF THOSE THINGS.

"Yup!" Karla said, beaming. "And Naboo is amazing. There are so many places to eat!"

Naboo was cool for other reasons, too, but Karla was really hungry, okay?

"You really never, ever been off-planet before? I was a freshman my first time. Ben took Ender and me out to Saturn--or was it Jupiter?--for lunch one day."

"Never," Warren confirmed. "Casual space travel isn't really a thing yet back home, and pretty much all of my travelling after starting school at Fandom was between different versions of Earth, and Kaeleer."

Rapture had been underwater, but Earth. That was about as far from the usual that he'd ever wandered.

"... You had lunch on Saturn?"

Warren was going to assume it was Saturn. The gravity on Jupiter would have been something worth making mention of, if that's where they'd gone. Maybe. Space travel wasn't exactly Warren's strongest subject, either.

"Next to," Karla corrected. "We had lunch in his spaceship and then I got to play in Zero-G. I banged my head."

And stories like these were why her friends were the awesomest.

"Bug him sometime. It's not like Ben'll turn down a chance to--Oh. Right. He'll be leaving in the fall, too."

That was met with a little wrinkle of Warren's nose. Right. The whole... people graduating and going their separate ways... thing.

"Well... you'll be headed back to the island in the fall, right? There's easy access to pretty much anywhere from the island, so long as you're persuasive enough with Portalocity. And with us having been in Kaeleer for the last few months, it's really not going to be all that different, right?"

Well, he'd be in Sunnydale with Tara, and that was going to be different, but it was Karla's melancholy that he was trying to battle here, and he'd worry about his own later.

"Ben and Ender will be hopping on a spaceship and flying to a different planet," Karla explained softly. "They'll be traveling for fifty years and when they get to Shakespeare, they probably won't have portals or anything."

So when they said goodbye...they'd mean it.

... Oh.

"Oh." Warren bit his lip, and then nodded a little. Okay, that put her melancholy a little more into perspective. "No... way to communicate, at least?"

"Well, I might be able to send a bunch of letters," Karla said wryly. "If the stupid IF let me. But they won't arrive for another 50 years or whatever. Time gets all stupid when you have to obey relativity."

WAY TO BE LAME, ENDERVERSE.

It was all his fault, clearly.

"Hey, thanks," Warren replied, offering Ender a smile that barely managed to contain his excitement. "To both of you, for inviting us. I think Karla and I were about to go stir-crazy back at the Hall."

Where it had been lessons, lessons, lessons, without a pause to breathe in between. Well, except for sleep, of course. Warren could see the need for it, but he'd be lying if he said that he didn't want a vacation somewhere in there before traipsing off to Sunnydale, too.

"I can only imagine," Ender said, though personally he'd probably have his head stuck in the books the whole time, had he been in Warren's position. "Hopefully the solitude here won't have the same effect. We're kind of alone out here."

"Alone, I'm used to," Warren noted, a wry little twist taking over his smile for an instant, and then it was gone. "A bit of quiet after spending so much time around the boyos is pretty welcome, too."

"I know the feeling," Ender said.

He didn't smile wryly; he wasn't going to imply anything about his own past here, thanks. "The water's a nice temperature for swimming-- but there's a hill nearby if you'd like to take to the skies instead. Shouldn't be any trouble."

"I'm not much of a swimmer," Warren replied, thankful that Ender took the time to point out the hill. "I kind of take to water like a fish."

In that he went under, and didn't tend to come up again for long stretches of time after the fact.

"But if the scenery is half as awesome as I think it is, I'll enjoy the opportunity to get up there and see it from above. I enjoy a good breeze better than getting wet, anyhow."

Ender quirked a smile at him. "There are only a few mansions scattered around this lake, so you won't have to deal with large audiences," he said, "It's vacation home territory for the most part, and it's lovely. You should definitely take the opportunity."

"I kind of get the feeling that one guy flying around out here is hardly going to get too much attention," Warren noted, still smiling. "Is there any direction in particular that I should head?"
