An afternoon thinking he was a little girl had not been exactly what Ben had been planning, though the distraction had been kind of a relief.

...not that he'd admit that.

He was in his room, carefully examining his air vent to see how the gremlin had gotten in and looking to see if there was a way to discourage them from returning without breaking the terms of the treaty.

The door was open a crack.

Feeling really sort of terrible still about the events of the last week or however long it had been, John had a few people he felt he should apologize to, and one that he felt pretty guilty about.

Venturing out of his room was the only way to accomplish that, but John could hope a gremlin wouldn't get him while he was with a Jedi. Ignore that he knew the Jedi got bit a lot.

So there he was, drumming his fingers on the door and peeking in the crack. "Hey buddy, you in there?"

Ben froze, then realized that was an extremely stupid reaction.

"Yes," he replied. "You're not going to throw anything gross at me?"

"I promise, nothing gross here," John sighed, pushing the door open. "I'm real sorry about that."

Ben made a face. "Yeah," he said.

"Yeah," John made a face in return. He thought it was pretty gross, too.

"It's good to see you with all of your bits attached," Ben said. "Let's not do that again."

"I'm not planning on a repeat event," John assured him. "But I did bring you a present to try to make up for it?" He held up a disc bearing a copy of Jaina and Tahiri's gremlin bite performance.

Ben flinched before he could stop himself.

"Sorry," he muttered. "Little jumpy."

John hadn't thought he could feel worse. "I'm really sorry, Ben. Maybe I should just give you some space."

If anyone asked, Jaina would say she was checking up. This was why she was knocking lightly on the door of Ben's room, occasionally scanning the floor to make sure nothing little and green was scurrying her way.

"Come in, Jaina!" came the slightly muffled replied as Ben wormed himself out from under his bed.

She opened the door, stepping inside, asking, "Am I interrupting?"

"Nothing that can't wait," Ben said, "unless I'm getting bit twice in a day."

She stared. "You got bitten and I missed it?"

Nice, Jaina.

"I didn't go around hugging people and thrusting my hips at them," he said, almost smiling.

Jaina sighed. "I'm going to hit him. What'd you do?"

"Tapdanced," Ben mumbled.

Aravis padded down the hall and peeked in, Ata on her heels. "Now," she greeted Ben, "that we are no longer being attacked by rotting troops, perhaps an explanation is in order."

Clearly pleasantries were overrated.

"Hello, Ata," Ben said, stalling for time.

"Ata says hello," Aravis told him, while the dog proved as much by trotting over to sniff at Ben. "Now, more to the point, I'd like to hear the explanation behind the messages."

"I didn't want you to worry," Ben said. "I know I'd been gone for a little longer than I'd thought I'd be."

"I understand that," Aravis said, "but I worried anyway."

He chewed on his lower lip. "I didn't mean for that to happen. I'm sorry."

"It's all right," she assured him, moving in through the door. "If you'll tell me what happened."

"It's a long story," he hedged. "Time passed faster there. I was gone a few months."
