Ben didn't have classes on Tuesday, so he'd spent the entire day going through the forensic evidence of his mother's crime scene on his datapad, so focused on the task in front of him that he forgot his normal Tuesday routine.

The photos...were grim.

Which was why the door was very firmly shut.

"It was the biggest weapon in the galaxy," Ben said. "Dad wasn't going to leave it there for someone to use."

"Meaning Jacen?" she assumed. It was very easy to figure that everything that went bad was because of his Jacen, while making her want to hug her own.

[momslilassassin]

"The Corellians fired it," Ben said. "It took out most of the Fourth Fleet and was possibly the stupid assassination attempt of all time. No one should've had it."

For someone who only heard bits and pieces of the situation, Jaina thought, "What the hell," pretty much summed it up.

"No one has the high ground on this any more. Right now the Jedi are practically a third government," Ben said. "Because that makes things less complicated."

"And Uncle Luke must be thrilled with that," she said dryly.

"He's had better years," Ben agreed. "I think if physically knocking people's heads together would do anything, he'd be doing that."

[solo_sword]

"I can't say I'm against that method," she said immediately.

[momslilassassin]

"You wouldn't," he replied with a small laugh as he sat back down on the bed. "How's your war going?"

The sigh he got in response was heavier than Jaina meant it to be. "It's busy," Jaina replied. "I'm probably going to have to go back there to take care of some things just so they can stop blowing up my comm."

Ben nodded. "Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be here very long before heading home again."

"More problems?" It's be nice if the galaxy could stop throwing those at him.

[momslilassassin]

"Old problem," Ben replied, "and there's only so much I can learn from still holos."

[solo_sword]

Not asking, but she understood that. "Ah. Do you know when yet?"

[momslilassassin]

"Depends how long it takes me to go through the forensic evidence," Ben said. "A couple weeks, maybe?"

[solo_sword]

She blinked at him. "Forensic evidence?" He could not really be fourteen.

[momslilassassin]

He shrugged, looking self-conscious. "I have to prove something, and saying 'I have a bad feeling about this' isn't going to cover it."

"You continue to surprise me," she said after the briefest of pauses. It wasn't a bad thing, but wow.

"In a good way?" he checked.

[solo_sword]

"Yeah," she said with a little smile. "But I look forward to the day when our family can stop doing things like examining forensic evidence while still in school."

[momslilassassin]

"This is a one-time thing," Ben promised.

[solo_sword]

"I won't deny I'm glad to hear that," she conceded. And really, it was the fact that he had to do it in the first place.

[momslilassassin]

"It's important that this one is done right," Ben said, a little too insistently.

It probably wouldn't be hard to guess the only case he'd care this much about.

Jaina honestly wasn't even trying to think about it. She was getting bombarded with problems from her own time, and she was a little worried about what would happen to her drive to fix them if she started thinking too hard on the details of how much things sucked in the future despite all her efforts. "And somehow I don't doubt that you'll make sure it is," she told him.

"I'm working on it," he said. "I'm going to have to call in some favors."

Let's not think too hard about how he got to be in a position where people owed him favors.
