Room 424 [early evening]

Ben didn't have classes on Tuesday, so he'd spent the entire day going through the forensic evidence of his mother's crime scene on his datapad, so focused on the task in front of him that he forgot his normal Tuesday routine.

The photos...were grim.

Which was why the door was very firmly shut.

It had been a while since John had gone to bug Ben and so he made his way downstairs with a bag of Twizzlers in hand. Gnawing on snack food the consistency of rubber was always a good way to start conversation.

He rapped 'shave and a haircut, two bits' against the door and chewed while he waited.

Ben jumped a little. He'd been a tad too focused. "Come in, John," he called.

John opened the door and stepped inside. "You know, that's never going stop weirding me out," he remarked. "You guys could at least pretend to be surprised when someone comes by."

"You could wear a mustache and a hat and pretend to be someone else," Ben countered.

"Like physical disguise would work," John said, holding out the bag of candy in offering. "I need to disguise my...whaddaya call it again?"

Ben snagged a Twizzler with a grateful smile. "Force signature," he replied.

"Right. That," John said, like he'd known the whole time. "You know, Jaina can use it like a cell phone."

"Really?" Ben replied, raising his eyebrows. "How so?"

Again, like John knew how this stuff worked. "Uh, I guess she thinks real hard? But I can get an understanding off of it."

After radio last night, Dean had made a note to check up on Ben and was taking this chance to do it. He knocked on the door.

Ben checked who it was through the Force, then shoved the datapad under his bed. "Come in, Dean."

Dean opened the door and came in. "You'd be a tough guy to sneak up on, huh?"

"If you're not a Jedi, yeah," Ben replied with a tiny smile.

"So what's this I hear about you and losing limbs?" Dean asked, getting right down to business. "Y'know that actually shouldn't a family tradition, right?"

"Mine are all still attached," Ben said. "But Tahiri knows about the family tradition too, so she worries."

"So what's going on that she felt the need to count your limbs anyway?"

"Dad called me home for a rescue attempt," Ben replied casually.

Ben's family was weird.

Jaina didn't like to crowd people on their first day back. Their second, however... Which was why she was knocking at the door.

"Come in, Jaina," Ben replied, moving to shove the datapad under his pillow.

Jaina opened the door, stepping inside and closing it again behind her. "Hey," she greeted him. "How are you doing?"

Ben gave her a smile. "Fine. Doing some work."

"Homework, or work work?" She wasn't sure she wanted to know what kind of work he had to bring home with him.

"Work work," he replied. "Something I should've worked on a while ago, really."

"Anything you can talk about?" Jaina asked. Not that she'd be offended if he couldn't. She knew how it went.

He shook his head. Telling one Jaina had been bad enough.

Which reminded him...he got up off his bed and reached out to hug her.
